Sunscreens and tips for your skin

Sun protection is always in style. Regardless of the weather, it’s essential to protect your skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays all year because sun exposure can result in sunburn, eye damage, skin cancer, the most prevalent type of cancer in the U.S., and skin aging.

Formulas that are lightweight, nourishing, cast-free, and provided with broad-spectrum UV protection by dermatologists and Allure editors are the best for preventing skin damage from “too much fun in the sun.” Of course, they’ve included the best sunscreens—formulated with broad-spectrum protection of SPF 30 or higher—into our daily regimens.

The sun protection factor, or SPF, measures how well it protects you from sunburn, but in regards to effectiveness, there are different percentages of protection from the sun. The majority of dermatologists, as well as the Allure team, advise using at least SPF 30 to protect against UVB rays because SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of them, SPF 50 blocks roughly 98 percent, and SPF 15 only blocks 93 percent.

Mineral or physical sunscreens, which are formulated with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide and “reflect UV rays off of them before the rays penetrate skin cells,” may be preferred by people with sensitive skin, according to Miami dermatologist Loretta Ciraldo, MD. However, chemical sunscreens, which “use chemicals that absorb harmful UV rays and convert them to non-damaging heat,” are preferred by those who prefer their SPF to feel more like a lightweight serum or moisturizer (that’s also more likely to induce zero white/gray cast).

Everyone knows how challenging it can be to choose the best sunscreen for their skin type and tone. Personal tastes can vary greatly, just like with any other skin care product. Allure editors and board-certified dermatologists have selected and recommended some of the best sunscreens to support you on your everyday quest to wear sunscreen in their article.

And it would be great to showcase a few sunscreens in my article so you can decide which is ideal for your skin. It’s also important to understand how sunscreen works on all skin types and, especially, how to apply it correctly to avoid sunburns and UV-induced damage.
