i am curious in your opinion what specific techniques and materials does Ileana Makri use to create such meaningful and symbolic designs, and how does her Greek heritage influence the cultural narratives reflected in her jewelry, as you obviously feel such a deep connection ?

Hi Catherine,
Thanks for your comment and question. The materials used to create her designs vary with the designs. She uses Tsavorite, Blue Sapphire, Brown Diamond, multi-gemstones, and other materials to create her collections. She sources materials based on what she is creating, what she discovers in her travels, and what is available once the creation process starts.
For every artist, heritage plays a role at some level, especially when you pour your heart into your work. For Ileana, you find elements of Greek mythology that stem back to her heritage and culture in her designs.

I appreciated the emphasis on the craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into each design. It’s a reminder of how wearable art can be both personal and timeless. The section about the symbolism in her pieces was especially intriguing—it adds an emotional layer to the jewelry that makes it even more special.

Hi Lorrie,
I loved reading your piece about Ileana Makri’s jewelry! It was really cool how you talked about the mix of Greek heritage and modern design. Her Globetrotter Collection, inspired by the pandemic, really caught my attention. You said it represents resilience and exploration, do you think this was a big turning point in her creative journey? It’s interesting how tough times can lead to such creative ideas.
You also mentioned how you enjoy blending tradition with new ideas in your work with luxury brands and art. That sounds awesome! Could you share an example of how this has influenced something you’ve picked out or worked on? I’d love to hear about a specific piece that really shows this balance.
One more thing, I thought her evil eye and celestial designs were so unique.
In your experience, have you noticed more people seeing jewelry as more than just something to wear, like using it to tell a story or express deeper meanings?
Makri’s focus on protective symbols feels super relevant right now.
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
All the Best,
Eric

Hi Eric,
I’m happy you enjoyed my post.
Although I cannot speak for Ileana Makri personally, I’m pretty sure that the Pandemic was a turning point for her as an artist because it was a time that truly forced all of us to think outside of the box and learn to do things differently.
I, too, tend to blend tradition with new ideas. My artistry consists of makeup artistry, personal styling, drawing, photography, and graphic design. As a professional makeup artist and personal stylist, I take elements of texture, line, and color that I may see or use in other mediums and find ways to incorporate them into my work. For example, I’m working on a personal project I call primary colors. With this concept, I have been creating makeup and style looks using these colors to create the spectrum of the color wheel, which is something you find in art class. I am also photographing the project, which allows me to balance the looks with backgrounds and scenery that accents the color story.
Yes, people wear jewelry not only as accessories but they become conversation pieces and stories inspired by the artist who designed them.
