The Designers Defining American Luxury in 2026

The CFDA Fashion Awards spotlight a fashion landscape shaped by craftsmanship, individuality, and more than one way to dress beautifully.

What does American luxury look like in 2026?

It might be a beautifully cut jacket, a dress that makes color feel powerful, or intricate handwork that carries a cultural story. It can be understated, expressive, practical, or wonderfully dramatic.

As the fashion industry gathers for the November 2 CFDA Fashion Awards, the nominees offer an opportunity to look beyond the red carpet and consider the designers shaping how we dress—and what we value in our clothes.

For me, the interesting story is the range of perspectives. American luxury has room for both an established fashion house and a designer bringing a different tradition into the conversation.

Five Perspectives on Modern Women’s Wear

This year’s American Women’s Wear Designer of the Year nominees are Catherine Holstein for Khaite, Michael Kors, Rachel Scott for Diotima, Tory Burch, and Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera.

Viewed through a stylist’s lens, each offers a different starting point for a wardrobe.

Catherine Holstein for Khaite: presence through restraint.

Khaite invites a closer look at silhouette, proportion, and the relationship between pieces. My styling takeaway: an outfit doesn’t need constant decoration to hold attention. Sometimes the shape of a jacket does the talking.

Michael Kors: polish with a practical purpose.

Kors represents a compelling conversation between glamour and everyday dressing. For a woman moving between professional commitments, travel, and evenings out, that balance matters. A wardrobe should support the life she actually leads.

Rachel Scott for Diotima: craftsmanship with cultural depth.

Scott’s Jamaican heritage informs her work, and the brand’s crochet is made in Jamaica. That gives the discussion of luxury a meaningful dimension: the skill, people, and cultural knowledge behind a garment deserve attention alongside its appearance.

Tory Burch: individuality within a polished wardrobe.

Burch offers an opportunity to think about personal style beyond a predictable formula. My takeaway is to leave room for curiosity—a different proportion, an unexpected combination, or a detail that makes something familiar feel personal.

Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera: the pleasure of dressing boldly.

Carolina Herrera’s Fall 2026 collection drew inspiration from women who have shaped the art world. For me, that connection makes a beautiful styling point: elegance can embrace creative expression. Color and presence belong in a sophisticated wardrobe.

The Conversation Extends Beyond Women’s Wear

The accessory nominees include Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen for The Row, Raul Lopez for Luar, Ana Khouri, Sophie Buhai, and Stuart Vevers for Coach.

Their inclusion is a reminder to consider accessories as part of an outfit’s composition. A bag or piece of jewelry can establish a focal point, change the mood, or make a familiar look feel newly considered.

Menswear brings another range of voices, with nominees including Ralph Lauren, Thom Browne, Todd Snyder, Willy Chavarria, and Public School New York’s Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne.

Taken together, these categories suggest an expansive view of American fashion. There is room for heritage, experimentation, and different expressions of identity.

What This Means for Your Wardrobe

You don’t need to follow every collection—or buy a nominated designer—to learn from this moment.

Look closely at construction. Notice which proportions make you feel confident. Explore craftsmanship beyond the names you already recognize. Give yourself permission to enjoy both simplicity and drama.

As a stylist, I’m interested in what happens when a woman finds clothes that feel connected to who she is today.

That is the value I see in following these designers: they give us more possibilities for expressing ourselves.

Which designer’s perspective speaks most closely to your own style?
