Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art

A Celebration of Fashion Without Boundaries.

At the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Schiaparelli exhibition is nearing closure. I’d like to revisit the designer who changed conventions and turned clothing into art.

What happens when fashion refuses to follow the rules?

For Elsa Schiaparelli, the answer was extraordinary.

Known for her imaginative designs, unexpected artistic collaborations, and fearless approach to couture, the Italian-born designer created a world. Clothing became more than something to wear. It was an expression of art, personality, and limitless creativity.

Since March 28, 2026, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum has celebrated that vision with Schiaparelli Fashion Becomes Art, the first exhibition in the United Kingdom dedicated to the legendary designer and her fashion house.

As the exhibition approaches its November 15 closing date, it offers an opportunity to reflect on one of fashion’s most revolutionary creative minds.

The Woman Who Saw Fashion Differently

Elsa Schiaparelli rose to prominence in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, a period of remarkable artistic experimentation.

While traditional couture emphasized elegance and refinement, Schiaparelli embraced the unexpected. Her designs frequently incorporated visual tricks, playful symbolism, unusual materials, and the influence of surrealist art.

Her creative world included artists such as Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, and Man Ray, whose collaborations helped challenge the boundaries between clothing and fine art.

When Fashion Becomes Surrealism

Among the exhibition’s most fascinating creations are designs that remain remarkably unconventional almost ninety years after their introduction.

The 1938 Skeleton Dress, created in collaboration with Salvador Dalí, uses raised, padded forms to recreate the human skeleton across the surface of a garment.

The Tears Dress, also from 1938, creates the illusion of torn fabric, transforming a disturbing visual idea into an extraordinary piece of couture.

And then there is the unforgettable Shoe Hat, a whimsical creation that turns an everyday accessory into something entirely unexpected.

These designs weren’t simply intended to be beautiful. They invited people to reconsider what fashion could represent.

The Art of Collaboration

One of the exhibition’s extraordinary pieces is a 1937 evening coat created with artist Jean Cocteau.

Its intricate embroidery reveals two faces in profile that also form a vase filled with roses—a brilliant example of optical illusion and haute couture craftsmanship.

The garment illustrates Schiaparelli’s ability to transform an artist’s vision into something wearable without losing its creative complexity.

A Legacy That Continues

Today, under creative director Daniel Roseberry, Schiaparelli continues to explore the relationship between fashion, sculpture, and art.

The modern house’s dramatic silhouettes, sculptural accessories, and inventive haute couture demonstrate how the founder’s daring spirit remains relevant.

What began as one woman’s unconventional vision has become an enduring creative identity.

More Than a Fashion Exhibition

Featuring more than 200 objects, including historic garments, accessories, jewelry, photographs, and artworks, Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art is more than a retrospective.

It is a reminder that fashion history is filled with designers who dared to challenge expectations.

And perhaps that is Elsa Schiaparelli’s greatest legacy: she showed the world that clothing could be more than fashionable.

It could be extraordinary.
